January 2012: NEWS FROM OUR PRESIDENT:
*ARTicipation: A Pop Up Studio. Opening this Sunday, Jan 22 at the Epsten Gallery of Art at Village Shalom in Overland Park, Kansas. KATA is partnering with this wonderful gallery and many local KC artists to provide an open/ self guided studio (open to the general public) along with many workshops between 1/22-2/24. Please see the Epsten Gallery website at:
www.kcjmca.org. This is a GREAT opportunity to help put KATA on the map in KC, and we will hopefully have some media coverage with this event as well as establish a relationship in the KC arts community. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering in any way.
*Emporia State Discovery Days...This is a great opportunity to support the wonderful things happening in the Emporia State Art Therapy Program. This year’s featured speaker will be Dr. Harrriet Wadeson, retired head of the University of Illinois Art Therapy Program, and one of the founder’s of the art therapy profession in the US. This event will be taking place in March.
*KATA fall conference- October 12-13th. Due to the change in the AATA conference, we decided to go back to a fall conference schedule. We have great things planned for this, thanks to Jessica Stallings. This year’s conference will feature people from an organization called Peace Paper. These great folks travel all over the US working with returning soldiers through a therapeutic process of teaching them how to turn their uniforms into paper. More info to follow.
*TEDxOverlandPark October 17th- I have secured the license to host a TEDx event this fall! If you are not familiar with TED, please look at their website at
TED.com. This is a very big deal. I initially applied for this license, thinking it would be an interesting avenue for an art therapist to be featured The magnitude of a TEDx event is humongous on many levels. The TED events are often surrounded by a media frenzy, and tickets go very very fast. We will have a series of 18 minute speeches from people in a variety of fields including art therapy to an audience of about 100 people. The speeches are filmed and then go to the TED website. These videos are sometimes watched by several million people..really!
With the rise of smartphones and apps, TED has taken the world by storm and is a growing trend on the world right now, a speaker’s life can often be transformed by their involvement in giving a TED presentation due to the popularity of this website/app.
I have already scheduled some fantastic speakers for this event who include: Dr. Wes Jackson of the Land Institute (considered by the Smithsonian to be one of the 35 most important people in the world for his involvement in sustainable farming practices), Dr. Richard Gordon, a physicist doing research on neural networks as a model for computer security, Dr. Eduardo Pena Dolhun a doctor involved with medical work in war torn countries and refugee camps and developer of a medical grade rehydration drink called Drip Drop, and a few others speakers. There will also be a party before and after the event in the atrium of the Nerman Museum. This TEDx event will take place at the Nerman Museum of Contemproary Art in Overland Park.

From Gaelynn: “Each team member is excited to explore how our fields are approached and practiced within the cultural context of Brazil. Although I know there are ineeded art therapists in Brazil, I’m not sure we’ll be in the parts of the country where they work and live. I’m looking forward to meeting professionals in the many fields related to art therapy, including psychologists, counselors, artists, second responders, indigenous healers, and more. I’m eager to learn about the culturally specific and personal symbol systems in the art of Brazil, and to absorb the culture, language and life of this colorful country. IMPORTANT! LEGISLATIVE ACTION: Please read below……!! (Posted 10.21.09)
The information attached is an Action Alert message sent to KATA from Christopher Campbell, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy from AATA. It is an effort to help us (local art therapists) to take action in support of recognizing creative arts therapies, including art therapists, in the Senate healthcare bill. Sherri Jacobs (KATA co-chair of the Governmental Action Committee with Amber Conover) asked me (Shelley) to forward this to all KATA members because it looks like a great opportunity to get the ball rolling on legislative action. Sherri and Amber will continue to forward future information as it come in and will help guide us in the direction we need to go.
One way you can help out is to contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to support our legislative request (see attached). Below is a sample letter you can send to your Senators. Please feel free to customize, and add your own anecdotes to make it personal. To find out the names and mailing addresses of your U.S. Senators, go to
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm. CUT AND PASTE AND SEND IT OUT!
Honorable ( )
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator:
As a practicing art therapist and as your constituent, I am writing to urge your support of the inclusion of language that recognizes and promotes the value of the arts in healthcare in the Affordable Health Choices Act being developed by the U.S. Senate.
Arts in healthcare is a diverse field representing over 16,000 medical, arts, and creative arts therapy professionals dedicated to enhancing the healthcare experiences for patients, families and caregivers through activities that range from improving the aesthetics of the physical plants to engaging people in activities that reduce their experience of pain and increase their ability to communicate emotions, to measurable therapeutic outcomes. This rapidly growing field integrates the arts, including literary, performing, music, visual and design into a wide variety of healthcare and community settings for therapeutic, educational and expressive purposes.
Your support matters. Inclusion of language that supports the arts will greatly facilitate our field’s ability to compete for grants to conduct research, partner with government and healthcare institutions to develop new interventions, and keep the patient’s experience the central focus of healthcare.
Thank you for your support of this very important matter.
Sincerely, ( )
